“You can solve all the world's problems in a garden.”

― Geoff Lawton

Food forests are a practical solution to many of the biggest challenges facing our world today.

Healing the Environment

One of the best actions you can take to heal the environment is to transform your traditional landscaping into a diverse and productive forest ecosystem.  When you grow your own food at home you can eliminate your dependence on an agriculture system that consumes an egregious amount of fossil fuels and plastics. As well, through use of native species, you can help to restore endangered wildlife in your own backyard.

Trees pull huge amounts of Carbon out of the air, and turn that greenhouse gas into food, flowers, wood, beauty and soil. Improved Health

It is not possible to buy fresher ingredients than those you grow in your own backyard. When you care for the plants and soil yourself you can be absolutely sure that the food your family eats is the highest possible quality. Your health and your tastebuds will feel the difference.

Food Sovereignty

It's no secret that Hawaii is dependent on imports for a huge majority of the food we need to survive. By growing your own food at home you can take a vital step towards ensuring that you and you family will always eat well. Each tree planted in Hawaii is a step towards a more prosperous future for everyone.

Economical

Planting a tree in Hawaii is one of the best investments you can make. One avocado tree is cheap and easy to plant, and will yield thousands of dollars worth of delicious fruit for decades. As well, the food forest model is designed to be as low maintenance as possible, so there’s no need to sacrifice your existing work or lifestyle. There is no financial investment that yields a higher return on investment and carries so little risk than the ones provided by nature.

Natural Abundance provides a range of individualized services to meet the specific needs of each customer. You don’t need to be a skilled gardener to reap the enormous benefits of a food forest. Our goal is for people on the Big Island to grow their own food, so to support this goal we offer a holistic design approach, tailored to each individual's circumstances, to ensure that the dream of a sustainable and abundant future becomes a reality.

Papaikou Paradise

A jungle of grass is a never an easy environment to begin a garden, but after thorough clearing, heavy sheet mulch, and dense planting, this food forest is well on its way towards an intensely productive and beautiful permaculture system. After only a few months this project is already producing a substantial amount of food, flowers, and medicine with remarkably little maintenance. Eventually, the large trees will form a productive canopy, shading out the weeds below and nurturing a shade loving understory.

Pure Korean Natural Food Certified

At its core, KNF is a partnership with indigenous soil life and a set of formulas for direct enhancement of plant growth through biostimulants. The aim is to bring fertility through balance and soils rich with life.

Korean Natural Farming (KNF) is a modern natural farming practice that merges ancient Eastern sustainability with efficient Western scientific production to result in phenomenal growth in every climate worldwide.

Even someone with no experience growing plants can successfully caretake their own edible landscape system.

In a permaculture design, different aspects and principles synergize with each other, bringing a greater cohesion among the different individual pieces.

The way nature intended.

Weed Suppression

Anyone with experience gardening in Hawaii knows how aggressive the weeds can be here. Through use of mulching and dense planting we can allow the desirable plants to outcompete the weeds naturally.

Dense Planting

Because a food forest is planted with an intentional balance of species that all require unique conditions to grow, we can yield far more from a small area than conventional practices. Even 1/4 of an acre of established food forest will produce a significant amount of food.

Natural Soil Building

By including support species like Comfrey and Pigeon Pea we can allow the plants to enhance and condition the soil naturally. Native Hawaiian plants can bring with them unique diversity to the soil microbiome. No need to till or add huge amounts of fertilizer every year.

High Diversity

A diverse forest ecosystem is naturally more robust and healthy than a monoculture. The plants will naturally grow faster and be less susceptible to pests and diseases. This holistic approach means that you can grow organically without struggling against pests.

Testimonials

“I chose Natural Abundance over other possible installers, because they made the most professional impression on me.”

They seemed to know what they are doing and had a nationwide network as a back up. I received a concrete quote and so knew from the beginning what I was getting into (other installers did not show up for appointments in time and only told me things like it can cost between x and y).

“Erik’s authentic passion for and dedication to tending the ‘aina and the plants is contagious and because of that he is so much fun to work with.”

He asks the right questions and has a genuinely collaborative approach to his projects, making sure the project is completed as envisioned, and opening a conversation when there might be alternative options to consider. He is a clear communicator which felt so important while working together to bring visions into reality.

“He listened carefully to what our priorities were, but more importantly, he brought an extraordinary knowledge base and passion for what was possible.”

He explained in detail a plan to build out portions of our land in a manner consistent with what was most important to us, including permaculture concepts, feng shui, and anticipated maintenance that flows with the current, not against it. With this new vision, it was clear to have Natural Abundance perform the work for us. Erik worked swiftly and the transformation was far beyond expectations. The project unfolded on a schedule and budget that was completely in accordance with his clear communication. We are not only satisfied with the transformation and our thriving food forest, but we are inspired by our new and healthy relationship with everything our land now provides.
